More power issues Date: March 12th, 2007 by SiD3WiNDR Categories: Interweb, Security Right after my previous datacenter power loss blogpost … Read this then this 🙂 Save one datacenter, forget the other. NIKHEF powerdown cause appears to be that they didn’t check the utilisation of their circuits and just blew all the breakers when tripping them. Oops. |
Special unixtime is back again Date: March 12th, 2007 by SiD3WiNDR Categories: Computing, Fun At 23:31:30 UTC on February 13, 2009, a celebration is expected as the Unix time number reaches 1234567890 seconds. This day happens to fall on Friday the 13th on the Gregorian calendar. |
To the bicycles! Date: March 10th, 2007 by SiD3WiNDR Categories: Uncategorized Since just before 12 or so, power problems occured at the NIKHEF datacenter in Amsterdam. Funny enough, they’re still not resolved. In the meanwhile, many internet providers using AMS-IX for traffic offload and peering are getting into trouble, as the NIKHEF part of AMS-IX is also down, so about 60Gbit of traffic has to go over other IX’es and transit, and it’s getting tight. Funny what one power outage can do 😉 (In related news, my Phyxia connection between bebru1 and nlams1 went dead because it passed through equipment located at NIKHEF 🙁 )

Slavery Date: March 10th, 2007 by SiD3WiNDR Categories: Fun, Interweb, Stupid After the funny master/slave IDE "debacle" , here’s another quite funny article with associated comments 😉 |
Digital Audio Access Protocol Date: March 7th, 2007 by SiD3WiNDR Categories: Geek, Home, Linux, Music, Software Installed Firefly Media Server on my home fileserver for fun (unfortunately not for profit 😉 ), and installed iTunes on my desktop. Never used it, but hey, it supports DAAP and that’s the big deal, right? 🙂 I have 22K+ songs in my iTunes player now, advertised via mDns multicast "modern" stuff. Yay! Tried to use it in Amarok on my laptop as well, but no dice. If I add the machine manually, I can browse the files via DAAP, but the actual discovery doesn’t seem to work. I installed the avahi daemon which takes care of mDNS discovery, but it still doesn’t want to find it.. 🙁 Any tips? |
Spam filtering Date: February 26th, 2007 by SiD3WiNDR Categories: Interweb, Stupid It seemed I wasn’t getting a lot of real mail, but really a lot of spam. When I only saw a few logcheck server log emails coming in, not even as much as there should have been, it began to dawn on me… I checked my SpamAssassin filtering folter and tada… 1800 spam and non-spam mails waiting for me. Hmm, how did that happen? Did SpamAssassin go nuts? Nah, not at all… While at FOSDEM I hastily entered a filtering rule in my Evolution… Specific header X-Spam-Status contains Yes. Looked fine… checked some emails in the junk folder… X-Spam-Status: No …… BAYES. Ack! Changed contains into starts with, re-filter, all is well. Ooops. |
The loot Date: February 23rd, 2007 by SiD3WiNDR Categories: Books Yesterday we went to the Boekenfestijn in the Brabanthal here in Leuven. Got there around 10:15, and while it opened at 10 the parking was just about full and the thing was crawling with people. Still got a nice bunch of books, all for the price of about 1.5 new good O’Reilly books 😉 Did get a Python O’Reilly book get snatched away right in front of my nose though 🙁 A lot of O’Reilly books, a few cat books, a Google book, and a book by our good friend Richard Hammond, called "What not to drive". A rocket car isn’t in there (yet!), heh, but Jeremy Clarkson’s Ford GT surely is 😀 |
