Armed with Sharpies, erasers and righteous indignation, two apostles of the apostrophe make it their crusade to rid the world of bad signs.

Sounds like a cool job… article link via Habbie on Facebook 🙂

More lenny upgrade

If you get the following error in your linux-vserver guest after upgrading it to lenny:

Feb 21 14:03:22 ftp sshd[18392]: error writing /proc/self/oom_adj: Permission denied

Adjust /etc/default/ssh ‘s SSHD_OOM_ADJUST=-17 into SSHD_OOM_ADJUST= then restart ssh to get rid of it.

For people running into this and not knowing how to easily fix:

Feb 20 09:15:19 tequila sshd[18110]: pam_env(sshd:setcred): Unable to open env file: /etc/default/locale: No such file or directory

tequila:~# ls /etc/default/locale
ls: cannot access /etc/default/locale: No such file or directory
tequila:~# update-locale
tequila:~# ls /etc/default/locale
/etc/default/locale

Or just fill it yourself:

tequila:~# cat /etc/default/locale
#  File generated by update-locale
LANG=en_US

Kenwood radio not playing MP3

After I accidentally drained my car battery (oopsie, doh – thank $DEITY for battery chargers) my Kenwood KDC-WV6027 didn’t want to play MP3 anymore – it just saw one big long "track 01" without sound. After some looking around the internet, the solution was found on the cdfreaks forums : just press the reset button on your head unit. Hopefully people with this problem can find it a little easier through here, too..

Telenet injecting ads into your dvb stream

Well, seems I’m on a (blog, har har) roll, "this just in" … via blade on irc:

View this first: Telenet IDTV broadcast

Then this: TV Vlaanderen DVB broadcast at the exact same time

Do we have to consider this to be normal practice?

Edit: it could be perfectly normal if someone messed up the timecodes to overwrite ads (normal practice, and TN probably pays for it) – thanks David 😉

RSS feeds

Warning: minimal rant ahead…

WHY do some weblogs not put the full article in their RSS feed. I can understand for some large sites that they want the reader on their own site because of (sigh) ads placed on-site, but certainly for some (semi-)personal weblogs, this really doesn’t make any sense. Perhaps some people don’t know they’re doing it (I don’t have my own RSS feed in my reader..) but I’m usually not very inclined to click on the actual link in my rss reader (btw, tiny tiny rss rocks). Some of the sites doing this: standaard.be, explosm.net, geenstijl.nl, engrishfunny.com … meh.

On TomTom POI’s

Last weekend I went to Antwerp to shop for clothes, followed by a visit to the world’s best frituur, N°1 in Antwerp city. It’s been years since I was there, seems they’d expanded and the fries were still as good 😉

However, after that I found it was time for some gas, so I entered the nearest Shell station in my TomTom. Alas, after driving for a bit, and circling the place where this Shell station was supposed to be, decided this was a wrong POI entry. Selected the next closest Shell, drove there, NO Shell. Getting a bit pissed off I stopped at a Total we passed and fueled up. (however I prefer V-Power above Excellium 98).

This was not the first time TomTom let me down, earlier I was driving through the Netherlands and craved for a Whopper… I had to try 4 times to find a Burger King, but all POI’s turned out to be fake, there were no BK’s around there anywhere.

What value do these things have?
